Hotel site-inspections in London

London by Carlos MeliaHotel site-inspections in London  |  London, UK  | During my last visit to London, over New Year’s Eve, I took a full day to review and visit a few hotels, what in our industry call Site-Inspections. I came to visit the following: The new Shangri-La Hotel, at London’s new iconic landmark The Shard. Followed by lovely and cozy The Connaught Hotel by the  Maybourne Hotel Group in Mayfair. The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, where I also enjoyed a lovely Fashion-Themed Afternoon Tea “Pret a Portea”. And finished my day at the trendy and happening EDITION Hotel London, with a few drinks at their original and intimate Punch Room. See my day in photos below.  Continue reading Hotel site-inspections in London

Afternoon Tea in London

Afternoon Tea at Claridge's HotelAfternoon Tea in London  |  London, England  | The search for the ultimate Afternoon Tea experience in London continues, and each time I visit, I book a few new options. This time, during my visit for New Years Eve, I lined up two venues, both located at iconic hotels of London, as the Claridge’s in Mayfair and The Berkeley in Knightsbridge.  Continue reading Afternoon Tea in London

The Goring Hotel London

The Goring Hotel London by www.carlosmeliablog.com The Goring Hotel London  |  London, United Kingdom  |  Recapping my 2013 of traveling around the world, if there was a hotel I always wanted to stay, was the iconic The Goring Hotel in Belgravia, London. And more so after The Goring was granted a Royal Warrant for Hospitality Services by Her Majesty The Queen, and was the where the now Duchess of Cambridge spent her last night as a single woman, and headquarters for Kate Middleton team, pre and post wedding. The best closing option to my experience across Scotland, Edinburgh and The Royal Scotsman Luxury TrainContinue reading The Goring Hotel London

NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel

NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.comNIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel  |  Edinburgh, Scotland  |  NIRA Caledonia was my first hotel stay while in Edinburgh, and it was the best introduction I could have had to this lovely charming town. No tartan. No stuffed deer heads. No prints of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Nira Caledonia, this boutique hotel blends Bohemian chic with contemporary comfort. Located just minutes away from Prince Street and the main attractions, at Gloucester Place, it allows you to experience the best Edinburgh has to offer only a stroll away to retrieve to the tranquility surrounded by cobbled streets and neo-classical elegance.

Each room and suite within our hotel accommodation in Edinburgh is unique, with its own opulent character, period features and quirky charm. At the same time, each is equipped with the latest in high-tech hospitality. I was hosted at an Executive Room. Fine fabrics and ornate mirrors reflect the extra appeal of our 9 executive double or twin rooms. Covering up to 33.2 sqm, each has a five-foot bed and a sizable seating area. Lodging in Edinburgh boutique hotels is rarely this grand or luxurious. Only comments would be: My Bathroom was very small and the bathtub was separated by a moving panel which did not prevent the water from coming out and flooding. If you consider this to be an issue, I would recommend moving to the next category which is a suite, featuring wider/bigger bathrooms. Second was the lack of closet space, which for a room of this dimension you would expect. Other than that, the room was very comfortable. Full WiFi access, Nespresso coffee machine, Flat Screen TV. The beds feature 2000 pocket springs with deep sumptuous fillings and the pillows are duckfeather and down.
NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.comBreakfast is served daily at the main building, which is door number 6, at the Blackwood’s Bar & Grill. Basic buffet and interesting A La Carte breakfast, with great coffee, for those who like me, truly appreciate a cup of strong coffee in the morning. Unfortunately, time did not permit experiencing dinner at the restaurant, which is known for its cuisine to be natural, fresh and often organic, with ingredients farmed, caught, raised or bred in Scotland. With over 25 Scotch whisky blends and single malts, their bar also focuses on local flavours.

NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.comSometimes the concept of “Location, Location, Location” does not apply, specially when redifined by boutique hotel.  I would say that seeing the Edinburgh that NIRA Caledonia showed me, was an experience in itself. Yet in the city center of Edinburgh, NIRA Caledonia enjoys a privileged location sanctuary for worldly, well-travelled individuals. Their philosophy is easy-going sincerity more than rigid rules and stuffiness. In a period residence that was once home to Christopher North, a renowned 19th century essayist, bon viveur and hedonist, their boutique Edinburgh hotel continues the tradition he set. CM @ Carlos Melia RecommendsNIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com NIRA Caledonia Luxury Boutique Hotel by www.carlosmeliablog.com(*) To book your own travel experience, do not hesitate to contact me either by email carlos@carlosmelia.com or phone # 917.754.5515. 34 Restaurant Park Lane London

34 Restaurant Park Lane London  |  London, UK  |  Just woke up from a long fun night out in London, where do we go, where do we go…. that it is not far from our new hotel, the Grosvenor House Hotel Park Lane, and the telephone rings, our friend John on the other side with all plans made, literally saved by the bell. Jump on the taxi on a rush of time and hunger, ha ha ha and two embarrassing and 4 pounds later, we arrive to 34 Restaurant. Local with touches, surprisingly, of Argentinean touches.
Head Chef, Paul Brown has developed an eclectic menu, using the grill not only for beef, but also for seasonal game, fish and shellfish. Located just off Grosvenor Square (entrance on South Audley Street) in the heart of Mayfair. Burned orange banquettes, oak parquet and a colourfulcontemporary art collection give the room a warm and inviting look, highlighted by the bespoke charcoal grill in the open kitchen. The grill, also known as a parrilla and fed by natural fuels, was custom-made and imported from Argentina.

My choices were: Fillet of Seat Trout with grilled asparagus, broad bean, & sorrel relish (£ 21). But my dessert was a BOMB, Lemon meringue bombe (£ 10). Lovely option John, right on spot and location. Should we walk back to our hotel ? just kidding.  Find out more at www.34-restaurant.co.uk. Bon Appetit.!! CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

The Wolseley my favorite lunch in London

The Wolseley my favorite lunch in London  |  London, UK  |  One of restaurants in my MUST DO & SEE list, every single time I come to London, is The Wolseley Cafe and Restaurant. No other restaurant catches my interest for a fabulous sophisticated lunch like The Wolseley. The Wolseley is a café-restaurant in the grand European tradition located in St James’ on London’s most famous of boulevards, Piccadilly.
Trust me, if you are in for a chic gourmet lunch experience in London, The Wolseley will be your perfect call, that if you manage to move your influences to get a table, specially on a sunny Saturday in London. Thanks to our local friend John, we did. A must try in the menu are the oysters, Carlingford Lough Rocks or Gillardeau Speciale. And of course, even at lunch, how can I miss my classic filthy Vodka Martini.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner… all day long, it is an experience. Also you can enjoy your own private dinning. Beautifully designed to complement the restaurant below, the Private Dining Room seats up to 14 guests and is available to book for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Discreetly hidden away from view, with its own private staircase, it is nonetheless very much part of the restaurant.  Filled with light from four sides, it is bright and cheerful during the day, and seductively lit at night by the lights from the restaurant and Piccadilly outside. In 1921, Wolseley Motors Limited commissioned the architect, William Curtis Green, to design a prestigious car showroom in London’s West End. He drew on Venetian and Florentine influences, as well as incorporating the Eastern exotic touches that were in fashion at the time. The grand, atmospheric interior with its towering pillars, arches and stairways was testament to the great ambitions of The Wolseley Car Company. The cars were displayed on the marble floor and cost between £225 – £1,300. Unfortunately, the cars did not sell well enough and by 1926 the Company was bankrupt.
Chris Corbin and Jeremy King secured the site in July 2003 and its restoration and renovation was overseen by David Collins Architects. The Wolseley opened in November 2003. Located at St James’ on London’s most famous of boulevards, Piccadilly, right across the iconic Ritz Hotel and steps away from Green Park. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends
