Six Senses Koh Samui

Six Senses Koh Samui  |  Koh Samui, Thailand |  Yesterday we moved to the Six Senses property, set on a gently sloping headland at the northern tip of Samui Island. Located just six kilometres from Samui Airport, the 20-acre, or around 9-hectare estate is a 45-minute flight south of the Thai capital, Bangkok. The resort is made up of just 66 private villas, many with personal pools, which are landscaped within natural vegetation, and with glorious, sweeping panoramas out to the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding islands.
Six Senses Samui has always been at the forefront of sustainability, and was Green Globe 21 benchmarked in 20 December 2006. Specifically, they achieved best practice results in six indicators: water saving, waste recycling, community commitment, community contributions, paper products and pesticide products.

We checked IN at an Ocean View Pool Villa, located throughout the resort and offer splendid views to the Gulf of Thailand from the bedroom located on the upper level, and also from the lower level on which the private pool is located. There is a sitting area and dining setting for intimate meals either inside the villa or on the pool terrace. Guests enjoy a spacious bathroom with oversize bathtub, double vanities and an outdoor garden shower. Now you can make your own conclusions, and decide.
Unfortunately, I guess sustainability is not our thing, and I wont say the resort isn’t a good quality/value property, since I know many guests and travel agents rave about them, but it was not the type of hotel/resort experience we were looking for our two last day relaxing in Koh Samui. In a few words not the hotel for us, but it might be for you, that is why I decided to feature it into my blog and let each of you decide, in all fairness to the hotel, you my readers and all the fellow hotel properties that continuously support my blog. As I always say, this blog is based on my own experiences and points of view, and I might not always be right, what I do not find appropriate for me, you might for you. And this is the beauty to be able to show you photos and videos for you to judge.

Everyone else we saw at the resort, seemed to be enjoying their time there, relaxing, at the pool or having cocktails watching the sunset. When things like this happen, I wonder and ask myself…. am I too spoiled or jaded ? and then I answer myself… NO. I know what I like and I know that what I don’t like, does not mean is less or worst, but just not for me. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

Hotel Check IN at W Retreat Koh Samui

Hotel Check IN at W Retreat Koh Samui  |  Koh Samui, Thailand  |  After a busy but amazing and successful stay in Bangkok, we flew this morning into Koh Samui, where we will stay for the next five days. Our first hotel stop is the sexy and hip W Retreat Koh Samui, located on a northern peninsula where Bo Phut and Mae Nam bays come together. After a brief intro to the property, we were Checked IN at our Beach front Villa.

Overlooking the glittering Gulf of Thailand, your Ocean Front Haven takes the treasures of Koh Samui and injects them with signature W style. Surrounded by a lush, manicured garden, it sits atop a huge wooden deck thoughtfully adorned with an oversized daybed, two lounge chairs and a wooden dining table for two. Elephant Polo is my new thing

Elephant Polo is my new thing  |  Golden Triangle, Thailand  |  You might say, Carlos is Argentinean, therefore Polo carries on his veins… but how about going a bit further, bigger and taller… how about Elephant Polo. It sounds quite eccentric right. Thanks to the Four Seasons Tented Camps Golden Triangle in the northern region of Thailand, I can say this this my new thing. Those of you following my blog regularly, know my weakness and devotion for Elephants, so I was quite intrigued and happy when this activity was proposed to me on my last visit to the camp.
A whole different set of rules. To sets of 7 minutes each, to preserve both the elephants – priority – and the players. I would have never guessed that elephants could run so fast. Elephant Polo can be quite exhausting, specially under the blazing sun of the Golden Triangle. I was lucky enough to play with the top and experienced players of the Four Seasons Team.

One of the many activities you can do at the Four Seasons Tented Camp, along with Training to become a Mahout or Sunrise Walk with these gentle giants. Please have a look at my LIVE interview with John Roberts – Director at Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation. Please like their facebook pages, help me spread the word about them worldwide and show your support to their amazing work taking the elephants out of the streets of Thailand. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

Hotel Check IN at The OKURA Prestige Bangkok

Hotel Check IN at OKURA Prestige Bangkok  |  Bangkok, Thailand  |  So we keep on the move testing new hotel during our stay in Bangkok. This time I am a guest within my own reality, since this new hotel came to me through my partner Rubin Singer. He is being hosted at the stunning The OKURA Prestige Bangkok, for the Fashion Show he will be doing along with L’Officiel Magazine Thailand. So for the first time, I get to enjoy a hotel as a true guest, and wow this property is indeed to be enjoyed.
Our Suite is the perfect size for an urban apartment, with all the amenities and services to enjoy Bangkok in full. Literally, both Rubin and I, feel that now, we have arrived to Bangkok. The Okura Prestige allows you to discover and enjoy the City of Angels, in full sophistication, while only steps away from your true urban experience, and that to me, is the way to enjoy Bangkok.
The way I feel about this hotel, is the perfect balance, where Japanese style, service and attention to detail meets Thai tradition and soul. Example of that is the turn down amenity you get every night, replacing the chocolates that are so passe.

We are staying on the 33rd floor, at a lovely Suite with stunning views across the dynamic Bangkok skyline though triple-glazed panoramic windows that insulate heat and noise. Suites combine comfort and luxury with the very latest technological developments designed to impress business and leisure travelers. The OKURA Prestige Hotel offers a total of 240 rooms.

Club level rooms are located on the hotel’s highest floors and offer an exclusive level of privacy with bespoke services available.
The opening of The OKURA Prestige Hotel Bangkok, the first of its kind, makes a new phase in development for OKURA Hotels and Resorts. Established in 1958, with head office in Tokyo. The OKURA Prestige Bangkok harmonises the Japanese principle of “Wa” with Okura’s philosophy of “Best ACS” (Best Accommodation, Best Cuisine, Best Services) to create a hotel that provides unrivaled hospitality, comfort and luxury in a city well known and appreciated for its outstanding levels of customer service.

The hotel most dramatic and spectacular feature is the cantilevered infinity pool. You are right, not quite original… seen this before at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore, but really…. you have to give it to them, it is quite impressive infinity pool overlooking part of Bangkok’s skyline. The outdoor pool, fitness center and spa area all located at the 25th floor. Not recommended for those scared of heights. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

Living with the elephants in Thailand

Living with the elephants in Thailand
 |  Golden Triangle, Thailand  |  A year passed by, and I had the need to see my girl back again. Yes you are reading right… I LOVE my girl. TongKam is the elephant I try to visit at least once a year, in the north of Thailand, at the Golden Triangle. Only one hour flight from Bangkok, you will arrive to Chiang Rai. From there the Four Seasons Tented Camps will transfer you in full style and comfort, to the Golden Triangle by a private transfer, and from there a brief long tail sail to the camp.

This is my third time at the camp, therefore I will not be repetitive or bore your with more details of the property. All you need to know, you can find it on my previous chronicles of Thailand and the Golden Triangle. This time I just want to share some photos, videos and moments of our bonding time with the elephants.

On upcoming post, I will also show you some new activities I did while at the camp, such us Elephant Polo and Sunrise Walk with the elephants in the border between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
Please have a look at my LIVE interview with John Roberts – Director at Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation. Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation

Interview Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation  |  Golden Triangle, Thailand  |  Dear followers, yes I am alive and back. Been away for a few well deserved days, at the Golden Triangle in the north of Thailand – Lanna District – at the fabulous Four Seasons Tented Camps. You know me, when I camp I do it in style. The Golden Triangle is located in the border between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, and for the last few years, thanks to Four Seasons and two other main foundations, has served as the refugee and paradise, for elephants rescued from the streets of Bangkok. Both Mahouts and elephants were given a second chance, and this is one of the main areas in Thailand, to come and experience living up close with the elephants. See my brief interview with John Roberts – Director of Elephants for Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation. Also visit and give your support to Think Elephants International. Congratulations and my full support in all the great work they are doing. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends
