24 Hours exploring Rome

24 Hours exploring Rome by www.carlosmeliablog.com24 Hours exploring Rome   |  Rome, Italy  |  So on our last and recent visit to Italy, we arrived to Rome, and literally we had 24 hours to explore the entire city. This was not my first time there, but yes the first one reporting for my blog. So we got in touch with a local tour operator who took care of us from the minute we arrived to the airport, till the moment we left Rome, onwards to our next adventure in the Tuscan Valley and Florence. ANDIAMO Travel was the company we chose for the challenge of discovering Rome, Florence and Venice in only 6 days. After a week and a half of exploring Italy, thanks to the expert local eye, knowledge and expertise of their tour guides, we can say that we DID IT. !!!  Continue reading 24 Hours exploring Rome

The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma

The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma by www.carlosmeliablog.comThe First Luxury Art Hotel Roma | Rome, Italy |  During our recent and latest stay in Rome, which BTW was very brief, we wanted to have a very well located hotel. A property that in the short time we had, would make us truly feel in Rome. Therefore we decided to go for a small boutique property, and I think we found the right one. The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma, this 19th century nobleman’s palace has been turned, after restorations, into an elegant and refine small hotel. Just a short walk from Via del Corso, Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps and most relevant attractions in Rome. I would define this property as Home Made Luxury, giving you all the services of a five star hotel, with the feeling of a home. Art places a great part of the concept, a curated lively space where guest can enjoy a cultural experience.  Continue reading The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma

DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK

DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK by www.carlosmeliablog.com DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK  |  Airlines  |  For my recent trip to Europe, I flew Business Class DELTA Airlines from New York JFK to Rome, and return from London, back to New York. I must say, I was happily surprised by their seats, service, meals and overall experience. Punctual, comfortable and smooth, despite a lightning struck our aircraft Boeing 676-400, just as we were taking off London Heathrow, which caused quite a scene and noise onboard. The incident was clarified by the Captain, not as quick as the entire crowd would have liked but comforting. The highlights were: Seat was very comfortable, full flat 180º bed, BusinessElite seats that cradle you from head to toe. If you are traveling solo, I like the concept of single window seats. Meals, celebrity chef and Napa tastemaker Michael Chiarello, were quite good and in perfect portions, with a nice selection of wines. Services was impeccable and very polite throughout the entire flight. Downfalls to me were: The entertainment system was not operating correctly, at least at my seat, which made watching the movies, rather unpleasant throughout the seven hours flight. Noise-canceling headsets could be improved. Amenity Kit is basic. Bathrooms are small for a Business Cabin.

DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK by www.carlosmeliablog.comCheckin IN at JFK New York was nothing to be mentioned other than as most other airlines you are granted PRIORITY Access through security points. In London Heathrow, you get access to a separate private check in area, were the entire process is easy and seamless. As for the lounges, when flying BusinessElite, you get access to the Delta Sky Lounge in New York, and the SkyTeam shared lounge in Heathrow. Note that flying BusinessElite, you are not allowed to bring any companions, only if you have a high status on their Frequent Flyer Program or you hold a Platinum of higher AmericanExpress card. The lounge in New York was way too overcrowded, so we decided to leave, being most seats taken and almost no food left. The lounge at Heathrow was much more enjoyable, featuring two levels, and the tranquility you would expect from a lounge.

DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK by www.carlosmeliablog.comFly in a flat-bed seat and sink into complete relaxation with full 180º recline. Speaking of full, you’ll also enjoy a full-size pillow, direct aisle access, more privacy and oversized personal entertainment screens. Stay productive, stay entertained or stay rested — the choice is yours. It’s nice knowing it’s all right there when you need it. Each flat-bed seat is outfitted with an electrical outlet and USB port, so you can keep your electronics powered up.

DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK by www.carlosmeliablog.comI must point out the excellent Lost & Found service by Delta Airlines. One of the members of our group, lost his phone on his flight from New York to London. A week after, when checking in, he was taken to the Lost & Found area, and his phone was there waiting for him, in a plastic bag, identified by date, flight number and seat.  DELTA Airlines Experience JFK/ROM-LHR/JFK by www.carlosmeliablog.comI must be fully honest, and say that I was not expecting much from an US carrier, as mentioned above, I was greatly and happily surprised by Delta Airlines International. Getty Villa Museum

Getty Villa Museum |   Malibu, California |  If you want to experience a different day while in Los Angeles, at a beautiful Villa with gorgeous Gardens and Roman/Greek fountains, then Getty Villa Museum is an option to be consider, and guess what it is even for FREE. The Getty Villa in Malibu is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. What should you expect to see: Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities arranged by themes including Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and Stories of the Trojan War. Roman-inspired architecture and gardens
The Getty Villa is modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, a Roman country house in Herculaneum buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Because most of the Villa dei Papiri remains unexcavated , many of the Getty Villa’s architectural details are based on elements drawn from other ancient Roman homes in the towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae.
Begin at the Entry Pavilion and follow to the Galleries and Gardens. Over 1,200 works of art from the J. Paul Getty Museum‘s permanent collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. The galleries organized by themes, include Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and the Stories of the Trojan War, among others.
Bronze replica of the  HERMES (in Greek or Mercury in Roman) is the God of Travel and Commerce, represented by the winged sandals. For obvious reasons, one of my favorite of the whole collection, perfectly placed at the outer Peristyle gardens.
Modern reproduction of   APHRODITE (in Greek or Venus in Roman) made in Marble. Goddess of Erotic Love and Beauty. Sculptured in a three-dimentional art form that can be appreciated by touch. Yes you read right TOUCH, being specifically selected by the Museum for the purpose of learning through touch.
The Marbury Hall ZEUS (in Greek or Jupiter in Roman)  Portrayed as a mature bearded man, Zeus sits enthroned in his role as king of the gods.
Mummy of Herakleides. This Romano-Egyptian mummy combines the millennia-old Egyptian tradition of mummification of the dead with the Roman tradition of individualized portraiture. The blending of these two traditions was characteristic of the ethnically and culturally diverse population of the Roman province of Egypt.
I spent an amazing day at Getty Villa Museum. My visit took approximately 2 hours, plus a 1 hours lunch sipping through Prosecco at the outdoors Mediterranean Restaurant just next to the Villa. I strongly recommend visiting the Villa, and I would come back again on any given time, to check some of the changing exhibitions. There is always something new to see and learn.
Timeline of the Getty Villa: (1945) J. Paul Getty purchases a sixty-four-acre site in Malibu. (1954) He opens the original J. Paul Getty Museum in his home to exhibit collection, of which Greek and Roman antiquities are an important element. (1968) Getty decides to re-create a first-century Roman country house, the Villa dei Papiri, on the property to display his growing collection of art. (1974) The new J. Paul Getty Museum opens to the public, becoming one of Southern California’s cultural landmarks. (1997) The Malibu site closes for renovation; the Getty Center opens to the public. (2006) The newly renovated Malibu site opens as the Getty Villa, dedicated to the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria.
Experience the Outer Peristyle, the Inner Peristyle, Herb Garden and East Garden, which are planted with species from the Mediterranean region.

(*) Check here and now, my full Getty Villa Museum Flickr Photo Album hope you enjoy it. CM
