Château du Breuil CALVADOS distillery in Deauville

Château du Breuil CALVADOS distillery in Deauville  |  Deauville, France  |  One of the many things I enjoy doing when I visit a new destination, is to try local spirits or classic drinks from the region. What more typical from the area of Deauville than Calvados and all its sub products like Pommeau and Cider.  Calvados is an apple brandy from the French region of Lower Normandy. My hosts, at Tourisme Deauville, brought me to one of the best place to do a degustation and visit a true working distillery, at Château du Breuil.

Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples, of which there are over 200 named varieties. The fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider. It is then double or single distilled into eau de vie. After two years aging in oak casks, it can be sold as Calvados. The longer it is aged, the smoother the drink becomes. Usually the maturation goes on for several years.
At Château du Breuil for only EUR 4, you can experience and learn about the whole process and after that do a little degustation. The whole visit takes approximately 45 minutes. Château du Breuil is still a working distillery, therefore the best place to see the whole process take place.

In the cellars, Calvados ages only in oak casks. The Château du Breuil company chooses its barrels carefully, because the kind, size and age play a very important part in the quality of ageing. The subtle exchanges between wood, air and alcohol give Calvados its smooth flavour and bouquet. Each Calvados is different, each cellar master has his own jealously guarded secret. The delicate and perfect tastes of our Calvados depend less on their old age than on the success of its blending, created by Château du Breuil’s cellar master.

As said, the firs step of producing Calvados, is to press the apples and get a dry cider. This is a moment of truth, and I must confess that I LOVE Cider. Yes, I must own it, specially when it is draft Cider. So my trip to Deauville was all about Cider, I could not get enough. But then I discovered Pommeau, which has the base of Cider, with the kick of Calvados, a killer combination.
Pommeau is an alcoholic drink made in northern France, result of mixing apple juice with Calvados (apple brandy). Most of the local Calvados distilleries produce Pommeau. I tried it several times during my visit, both at the distillery and at the restaurants as an apéritif and really liked it. Considered a mistelle, it goes very well with blue cheese, chocolate and any apple based dishes.
Château du Breuil is open daily. For more information visit their website at www.chateau-breuil.com, and remember if you plan to drive, go easy on the degustation, since my head was spinning around when I left the distillery, thank God I had my own guide/driver. Hotel Check IN Park Hyatt Paris Vendome

Hotel Check IN Park Hyatt Paris Vendome  |  Paris, France  |  Yes, yesterday I made it back to Paris, all the way from Moscow. I arrived late in the afternoon to check in at the stunning, sophisticated, exclusive and very well located Park Hyatt Paris Vendome Hotel. As its names implies, located steps away from Place Vendome, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Place de la Concorde and of course Opera. Below is the video of my room.

My Park Deluxe King is an oversized 30 to 40-sq.-metre room finished in exquisite detail with wood, bronze and silk, complementing a king bed with luxurious linens, generous work area with high-speed Internet access and limestone bath with soaking tub and stone-enclosed rain shower. Serene courtyard views from the three windows. Bathroom amenities such as plush robes and Blaise Mautin toiletries.

More will come later, since so far I have been only able to check in, go out for dinner, have a great drink at the Le Bar at the hotel, and go to sleep. Le Bar is an ideal place for international travelers to mingle with Parisians as they soak up the arty atmosphere and sip creative cocktails. Kir Normand a Deauville classic

Kir Normand a Deauville classic  |  Deauville, France  |  If you are looking for a local drink from Deauville, most provably they will tell you it is the Calvados, but the one that most locals drink before their dinner, is the Kir Normand. The region of Normandy is very popular for the apples, ergo Cider is not stranger to the area, which I LOVE, big fun of Cider here, specially if it is draft. Kir Normand, which I tried tonight at La Flambe Restaurant, is Cider with black currants. Just the perfect amount of sweet and acid. A votre santé.
