Hotel Bel Ami St Germain des Prés

Hotel Bel Ami St Germain des Prés by www.carlosmeliablog.com Hotel Bel Ami St Germain des Prés  |  Paris, France  |  So one of the three properties we stayed at during our last visit to Paris, was Hotel Bel Ami. This allowed me, believe it or not after having been to Paris over 10 times, to explore and live for the first time the Left Bank and the district of St Germain des Prés or 6th arrondissement, which I must say is now my favorite. The SOHO of Paris. Hotel Bel Ami is part of the Design Hotels group. A contemporary hotel with a welcoming and restful atmosphere.

These Suites have an urban feel – “little apartments under the rooftops of Paris”, as the designer enjoys describing them. The furnishings and architectural details, sliding doors, tables, dressing table and mirror are inspired by the simple shapes of the furniture found in the traditional bookshops of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The only thing I disliked about the Suite was the carpet and the fact that they had too many pieces of furniture for the size of the room, which made moving around a bit of a hazard. The things I liked the most were: Our two windows facing the charming rue St-Benoît, and the bathroom.

Hotel Bel Ami St Germain des Prés by www.carlosmeliablog.comThe lobby is very quaint, modern and inviting to just seat, relax, read a book and have a coffee or cocktail. The Bar is contiguous where two Bulle armchairs set the scene of a peaceful haven in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, with a private apartment feel.

Breakfast every morning was at Les Mots Passants, which was basic but good, offering a buffet and options a-la-carte. Vibrant colours shimmering under the light from a large bay window, book shelves holding a collection of art books, ceiling screens beaming down visions of Parisian life, together with a whole range of miscellaneous little objects such as you might find at home, come together to create a joyfully contemporary and welcoming atmosphere. The first morning we had breakfast there, but the following we went to the iconic Cafe de Flore, just one block away from the hotel.

Hotel Bel Ami St Germain des Prés by www.carlosmeliablog.comThe combination of the hotel and the locations allow and delivers a wonderful experience of Paris, and at least for me one I was not aware of and truly enjoyed. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

CINCO Restaurant at Das Stue

CINCO Restaurant at Das Stue by www.carlosmeliablog.comCINCO Restaurant at Das Stue  | Berlin, Germany  |  If there is a hot spot in Berlin these days, it would have to be the new Das Stue Hotel and all its food and beverage outlets, which include the fine dinning 5 – Cinco by Paco Pérez, the first project of four-times Michelin starred Catalonian Chef Paco Pérez outside of Spain. Cinco, Spanish for five, tickles all five senses, from eyes to tongue, and also represents the five fingers of the hand, symbolizing the handcrafted flavours of Pérez’s culinary art. Cinco  fine dining awakens the emotions with avant-garde taste experiences. In November 2013 the Michelin Guide awarded Cinco its first Michelin star. The design of the room, by Patricia Urquiola, is cosy and avant-garde, while understated and simple. I loved the open views to the kitchen. Our only comment, seating in the middle main tables, since we were four, was that the lights were too bright. Other than than that Cinco was indeed a treat to all senses.  Continue reading CINCO Restaurant at Das Stue

Hôtel Americano NYC

Hôtel Americano NYC by www.carlosmeliablog.com Hôtel Americano NYC  |  New York, United States  |  Last week, I had an express 24hrs stay at the Hôtel Americano in New York City, member of the Grupo Habita and Design Hotels, as part of my Stay & Dine OUT New York for locals, a different way to experience your own city. Located in the heart of the Chelsea between the High Line and the Hudson River. Quaint small hotel, very happening, on a rather quiet street, only two blocks from the Hudson River Park over 27th Street, between 10th and 11th.

Hôtel Americano takes design by simple choices, infused with a modern mix between nordic-japanes approach. Urban ryokan with wooden platform beds, warm lighting, natural materials, some with fireplaces, and although small bathrooms, some featuring soaking tubs. We were hosted at a STUDIO KING Room (video below).

My comments on the room are… I quite like the concept, but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of external views, having an entire wall in-front of us which could have been a full window. The bathroom was very small, and I quite did not find an use, other than decorative purposes, for such a fireplace. I loved the ryokan style of the bed, but I would personally have updated the phone sets, to match and blend with the concept.
Hôtel Americano NYC by www.carlosmeliablog.comThe experience on the Food & Spirits outlets was not the best to be fully honest, but I will be fair, the setting is quite interesting, although too happening and overcrowded to my personal taste. I would personally prefer more quality and less quantity. We were invited to try The Grill at La Piscine, a year round grill on the rooftop of the hotel, but in the end after a long wait and a rather rude host, we decided to move on to another option within the neighborhood. This was an isolated incident, and I must say that I have been re-invited to join them for dinner next week, so I might have more to share on this after my second, hopefully more welcoming, experience.
Hôtel Americano NYC by www.carlosmeliablog.comI must mention that the hotel also features a second restaurant on the ground floor, which is very popular among locals for brunch. French fare with a Latin flair. Chef Joseph Buenconsejo, presides over West Chelsea’s  dining room with outdoor patio.

Hôtel Americano NYC by www.carlosmeliablog.comSome of the featured amenities for those staying at the hotel are: Soft washed denim bathrobe by Loden Dager. Aesop bathroom products. iPad customized with in-room controls and guest directory. Guest bicycles. I would recommend this hotel for young travelers, who are not on the budget, and are looking to explore Manhattan with a hip sexy happening approach. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

Mainport Hotel sets course for Rotterdam

Mainport Hotel sets course for Rotterdam  |  by Design Hotels  |   With an envy-inducing location on the inner harbor, Rotterdam is about to get a new landmark: Mainport, Design Hotels™’ first member hotel in Europe’s largest port city. Wide glass windows wrap around the 215-room waterfront building shaped by MAS Architectuur allowing guests to see and feel the vibrancy of the harbor and see the famous cable-stayed Erasmus Bridge. Owner Karin Geurts enlisted the help of designer Feran Thomassen to create five-star interiors that make subtle nods to far-flung places, without forgetting that Rotterdam is the hotel’s ‘main’ port.

Wellness will be a recurring theme at Mainport and many of the rooms have facilities usually reserved for hotel spas, like oversized hot tubs with views across the city, or private Finnish saunas. And if that wasn’t enough, Spa Heaven situated on the eighth floor will invite guests to experience the sultry Turkish steam room and rejuvenating hamam complex. Guests can opt to arrive by water-taxi at Mainport’s private dock, where its quayside restaurant Down Under fuses flavors from around the world. Stay tuned for more details! Opening May 2013. www.mainporthotel.com / CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

My Day & Night exploring Stockholm

My Day & Night exploring Stockholm  |  Stockholm, Sweden |   This is the chronicle of my Day and Night exploring Stockholm on my first full day, after arriving last night. This is my second visit to Sweden and Stockholm, and I kind of revisited a few restaurants I like, seen some local friends and colleagues, and walked around town enjoying the breathtaking views of the city. Also came to the Ostasiatiska Museet in Skeppsholmen Island, to see their new exhibition Secret Love. I will be posting more about it.  Continue reading My Day & Night exploring Stockholm

Eccleston Square Hotel London urban cocoon cutting-edge technology

Eccleston Square Hotel London urban cocoon cutting-edge technology  |  London, UK  |  Most of the times prejudice plays bad influences on our thought, and we tend to underestimate things based on size, first impressions and location. This is what happened with me an the lovely Eccleston Square Hotel in London. From the minute I saw it from the distance, I saw a charming boutique hotel, located across a the quiet Eccleston Square. As I walk thought the door, I saw the modern lavish designed lobby and the intimate restaurant Bistrot on the Square. So I said to myself, OK I will have a safe comfortable stay, in a traditional sophisticated English Boutique hotel, and do not get me wrong, I was more than fine and happy with that, but I am always looking for more for an edge. Sneak Peek at the new The Surin Phuket

Sneak Peek at the new The Surin Phuket  |  Pansea Beach, Phuket, Thailand |  This morning I came to inspect the soon to open The Surin Hotel in Phuket. Located at my favorite spot in the island at Pansea Beach, allow me to say this… if you want to have the Amanpuri experience but not able to afford it, then The Surin Hotel will be your way to do so. There are many similarities between the two properties, not to mention that they are one next to the other and are the only two hotels with access to this private paradise of lush green tropical forest, white sand and turquoise waters. The Surin Phuket, former Chedi Phuket is ready to set off for success. Continue reading Sneak Peek at the new The Surin Phuket
