UNESCO World Heritage Alberobello | Puglia, Italy | One of my favorite attractions, during my week visit to Puglia in the South of Italy, which at the same time I must admit, was also the most touristic, was the UNESCO World Heritage site of Alberobello and the unique and charming Trulli. An exceptional example of vernacular architecture. It is one of the best preserved and most homogeneous urban areas of this type in Europe. A Trullo or plural Trulli, (from the Greek word τρούλος, cupola) is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. Trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. Traditionally trulli were built using dry stone masonry. Their golden age was the 19th century. Nowadays you can find houses, hotels, restaurants and stores, inside the Trulli, all over the town of Alberobello, also part of the province of Bari. Town we named, in a funny way “Trulliland”, making you feel either in the Hobbit’s Shire Middle-Earth or right into a scene of the Smurfs. Continue reading UNESCO World Heritage Alberobello
