My first Summer 2016 full week in Fire Island | Fire Island, United States | Lovely week – as every year – at our Beach House in Fire Island PINES. filled with beach walks, quire relaxing time, friends and family visits, cooking and glasses of wine and lots of breathtaking sunsets over the bay. Lucky enough 6 more weeks ahead await for Rubin, Bruna and I. Very few places in the world give me so much peace and happiness. Fire Island is one of them, and lucky enough this island is only two hours away from New York. No need for long-haul flights. Hope you enjoy my report in photos on this experience. GPS Carlos Melia back in Fire Island | Fire Island, United States | After a great weekend last week of the holidays, I went back to New York city to take care of some business, and as quick as I could, I got back to Fire Island. My favorite time to be at the island is during the week, when it is quite and you can concentrate on relaxing, working, unwinding, cooking and walking by the beach. The time when the deers come out and you can spot them while running along the boardwalk by the beach. Thursday and I have already began my weekend mode. Here is my day in photos. My day upon arrival after 4PM, was at the outdoor pool sipping Rose aux Provence. Then off for a run by the beach. Finally cooking a healthy meal and dining at the deck enjoying the sunset. A typical day week at Fire Island, before the weekend craziness begins. More to come for sure over the weekend. CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends
Holiday Weekend at Fire Island in Photos | Fire Island, US | It’s almost every year for the last 6 years, that we come to Fire Island to spend long Holidays Weekends and others. It’s the opening the Summer 2013 season. Although some of the public areas remain closed, like the iconic Pavillion, Fire Island is always a great getaway from the Big Apple. This year, we are at a new beautiful house on the bay side, only minutes away from the harbor, with fantastic views of the water beyond the outdoor pool. Despite the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island looks beautiful as always, including the beach line. Hope you like my morning walk photo album after my coffee at the Canteen. Another lovely weekend in Fire Island | Fire Island, New York, United States | Once again another lovely, relaxing, fun and social weekend in Fire Island. We came on Friday night, and we just arrived back to New York this morning, after taking the 7.30AM ferry to Sayville. The weather forecasted a dreadful weekend, but it was quite the opposite. Anyhow it is always, regardless of the weather so charming to getaway and enjoy the magical, fun atmosphere of this island. Continue reading Another lovely weekend in Fire Island
Fire Island favorite Restaurants day/night | Fire Island, New York | once you are in the island you are restricted to the local options, and to be honest I am not of the kind that on my time off likes to cook, do groceries or hang around the kitchen. So out of all the option in Fire Island I have pick two of the that will cater to all your needs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. FYI tea is not an option since I am 100% sure you will be at both the LOW and HIGH Tea where all the crow gathers before the big night begins. For breakfast, lunch or just to socialize during the day, my choice was canteen. Indoor and outdoor seating area, salads, sandwiches, pastries, coffee and more. Prices for being in an island are pretty reasonable, but expect to pay a few bucks extra on everything. Canteen is located in between Hotel Ciel and the Pavilion complex. When the lights come down, the option is PINES Bistro. A little Italian Bistro with low light and intimate ambience, located within the Sip & Twirl complex right off the harbor. My choice for the night there, was the Artichokes starter which fairly good and their famous Chicken Parmigiana which although not looking very catchy to the eyes was very tasty and filling. Average price with 2 glasses of Cabernet approx. USD 60 per person dessert not included. Enchante CM
SouthBay Clipper to Fire Island | New York, Fire Island | so you may ask yourself how do I get to Fire Island ? Well here is how. (1). Take the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station to Sayville. Transfer trains in Jamaica or Babylon Station. Check Fares and Itineraries here. (2). At Sayville Station a $5 bus will be waiting to take you to Fire Island ferry. If you are traveling off-peak season, call Colonial Taxi at 631-589-3500 for a lift to the ferry. (3). Take the Fire Island Pines ferry which is $14 roundtrip. Schedules are listed here. Travel time fro NYC to Fire Island Pines: 2 – 2.5 hours. FYI on the boat you are allowed to bring pets for an extra charge (of course they know we love our pets right) They have announced other alternative ways to get to PINES for the season like the FIPBUS. But I have checked their website and at the moment is down. FIPBUS.com – We’ll take you to the Pines and back for only $20 a ride. The FIP BUS is part of our Fire Island 101 program that introduces newbies to the Pines. If you’ve never been to Fire Island, you have no idea what you’re missing. Been to all of them Provincetown, Asbury Park among other gay hot spots in the United States… and for accessibility, fun and beauty I personally have Fire Island Pines on the TOP of my list. CM

The Madison at Fire Island Pines | Fire Island, New York | Yes boys you read right, the winter is over and the first weekend of Fire Island is here, very crowded to my surprise. I am staying at The Madison Hotel at Fire Island Pines, the premium lodging option in the island when talking about hotels. A small boutique charming hotel, located only steps away from the beach, the harbor and all the entertainment. My previous experiences in Fire Island were having a share in a house, but hey nothing like the perks of a hotel, breakfast, housekeeping, WiFi, Cable TV to better enjoy your stay. (picture below is the main entrance to the hotel). Situated in one of the most beautiful gay hot spots in the United States, only 2 hours and something away from New York City (who would think right), sixty seconds walking from the ferry station of the Pines and sixty seconds from the beach, and exclusive compound that’s a world away. Rooms are divided in three categories: Madison Rooms (the smallest ones) located within the main house, Garden Rooms (the one I am staying at and the one on the video below) with all glass doors and great views to the pool, and the Penthouse Rooms (the largest rooms) on the second floor with private balconies. Unfortunately the hotel was completely sold out (yes being the first weekend), so I was not able to take videos or photos of the other room types. All rooms feature private bathrooms, iPod docks, WiFi access, Cable TV, large flat screen TVs, air condition/heat and fans.
While your stay at The Madison, you will also be able to enjoy the outdoor pool area, roof deck with great panoramic views, hot tub, massage therapist by appointment.
Weekends are high on demand, when all New Yorkers run away from the heat of the city to lay on the beach, enjoy the Low/High Tea scene and some others, go wild and crazy at The Pavilion disco in the island. Fares are much more accessible during the week, for those looking for a quiet time, to relax at the pool, enjoy the beach and some of the gourmet options around. Fire Island is a great destination for locals to getaway and for foreigners to see a different side of New York, while mingling at one of the TOP hot spot gay summer destination of the United States.
