Recreate the Gilded Age in the Playground of Gatsby

Recreate the Gilded Age in the Playground of Gatsby  |  Newport, Rhode Island  |  Ocean-side mansions surround the charming coastal city of Newport, which was once a playground for the rich and famous of the Gilded Age. Built in 1909 by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt of the illustrious family of the same name – prominent figures in the 1920s and who to this day remain one of the richest families in US history – Vanderbilt Grace, as it is known today, retains the history of this time with unmatched heritage, yet modern service.
While Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, hitting theatres this May, boasts Leonardo DiCaprio in its distinguished cast, it was the 1974 adaptation of the novel that featured the grand Newport mansions. As Gatsby fever starts taking hold, Vanderbilt Grace is offering guests a chance to explore this historic city with the Grace Gatsby package, inclusive of two nights’ accommodation with Champagne breakfast, tickets to the iconic Newport mansions, a sunset sailing cruise taking in the historic sites of the city and a vintage five-course dinner for two with wine pairings at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, Muse by Jonathan Cartwright. Created by Group Chef de Cuisine Jonathan Cartwright, the vintage menu is modeled on a Vanderbilt family menu from 1912 and is a tribute to the mansion’s long and celebrated history.
 The Grace Gatsby package includes:
> Two night stay at Vanderbilt Grace
> Two Newport Mansions Passports (includes admissions to any five of the following: The Breakers, Chateau-sur-Mer, Chepstow, The Elms, Green Animals Topiary Garden, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Marble House and Rosecliff)

Mainport Hotel sets course for Rotterdam

Mainport Hotel sets course for Rotterdam  |  by Design Hotels  |   With an envy-inducing location on the inner harbor, Rotterdam is about to get a new landmark: Mainport, Design Hotels™’ first member hotel in Europe’s largest port city. Wide glass windows wrap around the 215-room waterfront building shaped by MAS Architectuur allowing guests to see and feel the vibrancy of the harbor and see the famous cable-stayed Erasmus Bridge. Owner Karin Geurts enlisted the help of designer Feran Thomassen to create five-star interiors that make subtle nods to far-flung places, without forgetting that Rotterdam is the hotel’s ‘main’ port.

Wellness will be a recurring theme at Mainport and many of the rooms have facilities usually reserved for hotel spas, like oversized hot tubs with views across the city, or private Finnish saunas. And if that wasn’t enough, Spa Heaven situated on the eighth floor will invite guests to experience the sultry Turkish steam room and rejuvenating hamam complex. Guests can opt to arrive by water-taxi at Mainport’s private dock, where its quayside restaurant Down Under fuses flavors from around the world. Stay tuned for more details! Opening May 2013. www.mainporthotel.com / CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends

Private Cellar at Club 21 by Belmond

Private Cellar at Club 21 by Belmond  |  New York, United States  |  I am lucky enough to have enjoy great dinner, cocktails and evenings at Club 21 in New York City. Either having a wonderful meal at the main room, of a glass of champagne next to the fire place during cold winters over lovely conversations. But today, for the first time, following the speakeasy legendary Prohibition-era, I join a very private group of New York leading travel agents, at the wine cellar.
Just walk through the main room, by the iconic Club 21 kitchen, and down to the cellar, to find private stocks of wine bottles under names like Nixon or  Elizabeth Taylor, regulars of Club 21.
The special occasion, the official introduction to Belmond newest property, to open soon in Santa Barbara, California (March 18th. 2013), named El Encanto. This iconic hotel is being meticulously restored to capture all the original romance and glamour that endeared it to both the Santa Barbara community and vacationers in search of seclusion and charm. Ninety-two California-style bungalows dot the lush, landscaped gardens with sweeping views of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. Original architectural features are being lovingly brought back to life, while modern additions include an expansive outdoor swimming pool and beautiful boutique spa. (www.elencanto.com).
We shared a lovely dinner with the management of the soon to open El Encanto, and the Belmond Regional Managing Director for the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. In such a stunning room. Low lights, vaulted walls covered with ancient wine bottles, guarded by our for private waiters.Such an unique experience, to perfectly match what El Encanto promises to offer to their guests from next March 2013 on, with the sophistication and detail that Belmond knows how to do. So stay tuned for more, cannot wait to come an visit, and I have got my invitation already YAYYYY.!!! Carlos Melia Luxury Travel Curator – www.carlosmelia.com

NapCabs at Munich International Airport

NapCabs at Munich International Airport  |  Munich, Germany |  One of the best travel ideas I have seen in years, which I hope will extend globally. How about your own room/cabin right next to your flight boarding gate. Comfort and privacy for passengers inside airport terminals Making the stay at the airport more pleasant an comfortable is the idea behind NapCabs. Rent by the hour (EUR 10) and pay as you go, for a minimum of 3 hours and a maximum of 12.

NapCabs offer the perfect solution for passengers and airports, to enter the next level of comfort inside airport terminals. Self service, pay as you go, and for as many hours you want solution. Unfortunately I did not have time to try them myself, since I was just connecting flights with Lufthansa from Moscow to Paris, but next time I will, since I hope this brilliant idea will replicate around the world.
I mean most airports charge and average of EUR 5 per hour for the WiFi connection, therefore, you might as well pay the extra EUR 5 and have a pleasant time at the airport while in transit. Enjoy Ethernet Internet connection, use your own desk, and take a nice flat rest while you wait for your connection. For more information www.napcabs.net. So civilized of course had to be in Germany and at the Lufthansa Terminal. !!! CM @ Carlos Melia Recommends
