Weekend relaxed mode in style at Belmond Maroma Resort | Riviera Maya, Mexico | October for me was all about Riviera Maya, twice in one month. First to attend ILTM Americas, with an extension of a two nights stay at Hotel Esencia. And this last one, invited by Belmond Hotels, Journeys and River Cruises to Belmond Maroma Resort, as part of the founding members of their LGBT Advisory Board. I have been to Belmond Maroma Resort, countless times, and each time I check out, I make sure to plan for my next visit. For more tips and recommendations, check and follow me on Instagram, to see all my minute-to-minute past/current/future post and experiences on RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico.
Such an easy flight, and easier flying on American Airlines new Business Class configuration. Non-stop flight New York JFK to Cancun Airport in less than 4 hours. So a movie, lunch and some sleep, and you are right in heaven, in Riviera Maya and at my favorite beach in the region, at Maroma Beach.
Upon landing, the team at Belmond Maroma Resort, will be waiting for you at the airport, ready to transfer you to the resort ( approx. 35 minutes drives away from Cancun ). From the moment you arrive to the resort, until you leave, get ready to enter in a full relaxation mode, and allow them to pamper and spoil you with their Mexican camaraderie and charm.
Maroma Beach, a dreamlike location on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, is unlike any other beach in Riviera Maya. Turquoise water and pristine white sands, which are mixed with a fine powder of pink coral, surrounded by lush tropical jungle. I mean not much more to say, beyond the photos above.
Upon arrival, I was taken to my lovely Ocean Front One-Bedroom Suite. With expansive terraces and uninterrupted sea views. Bathe in your private plunge pool, or refresh under indoor and outdoor showers. This suite is ideal for newlyweds on their honeymoon or a family of four, but I was very happy to have all to myself, as well. Exclusive spa areas right on the beach, as well as a separate air-conditioned fitness room. Here you can read about my previous stays at Belmond Maroma Resort. IMPORTANT Book this hotel with me and enjoy the following VIP Amenities: Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability for all room categories. (Last upgrade from master suite to One bedroom suite. Upgrade not applicable from Dec 18 to Jan 2) + A full breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests + One 30 minutes body oil relaxing massage per person per stay + Maroma floral bed decoration on arrival + Early check-in/Late check-out subject to availability.
The rest of my day, all I did was RELAX. I stayed at my Suite and enjoyed a leisure day by the beach. Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa offers indeed, pure escapism with a touch of Mayan magic. A true haven of well-being.
As the sun began to set, it was time to get off my Mexi(coma) and get on to my daily workout routine, using my private gym and then enjoy the gorgeous views of the ocean.
The evening was about to begin. The true reason of my visit, was to take part of our annual global meeting, as part of Belmond’s LGBT Travel Advisory Board, of which I am proud to be among the founding members. Tonight was our opening Gala Dinner…
We all gathered at the main house and enjoyed a lovely evening over Tequilas, Mescals, Margaritas and amazing local Mexican flair prepared by Chef Gabriel Kolofon at Freddy’s Tequila and Ceviche bar. This beachside spot offers the largest collection of tequila and mescals in the region. Discover the history of Mexico’s famous liquor and dine on the finest fresh-fish ceviche, sushi and sashimi.
After a fantastic – but long – first day, it was time to call it the night and head back to my suite, for a night beauty treatment and bedtime. Following morning, I was planning to join the Yoga Class at 6.30AM. Good Night. !!!
Early morning, my coffee was delivered to my suite, and as I was sipping through it, to wake me up, I headed to the Kinan Spa, for my one-hour Yoga Class. When in Riviera Maya, for some strange reason – perhaps the energy of the water – I always wake up super early. Sunrise is always an spectacular show to watch, specially when you may do so, from the comfort of your private plunge pool facing the ocean.
After a shower – I love the outdoor showers, as I continued enjoying my coffee, I walked to my favorite spot in the resort, The Observation Tower. Hidden to most, but I have enjoyed breakfast there many time, and it is my place to go early mornings to enjoy panoramic views of the resort. Climb the observation tower for a magnificent 360-degree views. Be serenaded by the sounds of the jungle as you enjoy a private meal. Gaze down through the treetops while the sun rises or slips beneath the horizon.
Breakfast was in order. Served at El Restaurant, located right on the beach. I always order the same exact breakfast – Chilaquiles with chicken and green sauce. But make sure to stop by and say hi to ” La Tia ” and try her tortillas. You wont regret it.
It was time to work, as part of the founding members of Belmond’s LGBT Travel Advisory Board. An honor to be part of this meeting of the Gay-Luxury-Travel minds, gathering a select group of nine travel professionals and press from around the world, curated by Belmond. An unprecedented and pivotal effort within the world of luxury hospitality. CONGRATS Belmond. !!! During our day long meeting, we’ve covered different topics and aspects concerning luxury travel and the gay market. Looking forward to our next meeting in June 2017, which will take place in Peru, aboard their brand new overnight luxury train – Andean Explorer, as we travel from Arequipa to Puno ( Lake Titicaca ) and Cusco.
During this visit to Belmond Maroma Resort, I was determined to try their Temazcal Ritual, unique to this mystical land. Performed at dusk, this ancient ceremony involves chants and meditation, guided by a local shaman. Heated rocks are doused with herb-infused water to create an aromatic, healing steam. Aloe vera is then applied to nourish the skin. After the sun sets, plunge into the sea. You are left feeling refreshed and at peace. In the past, I was afraid to try it, thinking I would feel claustrophobic, but after my recent experience, I can say the Maya Temazcal was a truly magical experience.
Once again, the evening was upon us, and the amazing team at Belmond Maroma Resort, went out of their way to create a fantastic setting for our farewell gala dinner. We enjoyed a lovely 4-step Mexican Gourmet dinner right on the beach. Such a unforgettable experience.
I decided to stay over for an extra day and night, after our meeting, to enjoy the resort in full. Since I have been to Riviera Maya, many times, there was no need for me to go an explore further, so the rest of my time at Belmond Maroma Resort was just relaxing, eating, drinking and sleeping. But just FYI, here are some of the experiences you might be able to enjoy during your visit… Sailing and Yachting, Mayan Sites, Whale Shark Tours, Cenotes Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Swimming with Dolphins, Cooking Classes, Golf, among many others…
My last dinner, was on my own…. and I truly enjoyed it I must say. For it I chose the Terrace of El Sol Restaurant. Exquisite Mediterranean-style cuisine with a unique Pre-Hispanic Mexican twist, in a relaxed ambiance, featuring uninterrupted sea views. A wide selection of and international wine list, including, my choice of new-generation Mexican wine.
