A matured comeback to Mandarin Oriental Bangkok | Bangkok, Thailand | My first stay at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, or iconically known as Oriental Bangkok, was over 4 years ago. At that time I was a different person, looking for different type of experiences, as it has happened organically through out all my personal and professional life. At that time, perhaps, ranked low as my favorite experiences in Bangkok, but after my recent stay, at my 41 years of age, I have to say it was simply PERFECTION. After countless times being in Bangkok, I have grown a deep love for the Chao Phraya River, and how it defines the nature of this destination, and to stay at a hotel at the streams of this charismatic feature, was something I would have never looked for before, and today I truly appreciate. So I guess we can appropriately say, that Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, it has taken some time, but it has grown in me, to be come I would say, my top choice when visiting Bangkok. See and follow my full Instagram Photo Gallery on Bangkok…If there is something everyone would agree, regardless you like the concept, style and design – which for some can be a bit dated, but in my case I happen to enjoy and appreciate – is that service is FLAWLESS. And this coming from a hotel located in Asia, it is lot to say, and speaks volumes of their DNA as an iconic world renown and respected luxury hotel.
You experience begins, hours before Checking IN, and right off my arrival on ETIHAD Airways, granting a marvelous the first impression and love at first site, the minute you see you host and private chauffeur – dress impeccably in a white suite – waiting for you at the airport and escorting you to your luxury car, to transfer you seamlessly… not to the hotel, but directly to your room/suite.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, the Grande Dame of Bangkok, is to my modest point of view, the true definition of an urban Resort. I mean, there was not a minute I wanted to leave the hotel. Yes I know, I have been many times to Bangkok, so not that I needed to go a explore much the traditional landmarks.
As I arrived to the hotel, being 8AM, I was instantly whisked to my room, and greeted by my Butler, whom Checked me IN and went over my itinerary for the next two upcoming nights and reconfirmed my Jet Lag Massage for 11AM. I was hosted at a lovely DELUXE Room, overlooking the Chao Phraya River. DELUXE Rooms are located on the higher floors of the hotel, these elegant rooms offer river and city views. Featuring traditional Thai touches such as teak furniture and beautiful silk accompaniments, the rich decor is supremely stylish yet wonderfully comfortable. Furnishings include the choice of king or twin beds swathed in luxurious linens, while spacious bathrooms have large soaking baths in which to relax.

As I settled in, and before my massage appointment, I went downstairs to explore around and enjoy my second breakfast of the day ( first taken onboard ETIHAD Airways 2 hours before landing in Bangkok). I was literally drooling as I was walking out to the River Side Terrace, to have my favorite breakfast options when in Asia… to be soups and more soups.
After breakfast, a brief stop by one of the two outdoor pools to refresh, and onwards I went to the Spa, to enjoy my 60 minutes Jet Lag massage treatment. Now going to the Spa and Wellness Center ( which I did every single morning ), it is an experience itself. The Spa, Wellness Center and Mandarin Oriental Cooking Class, are located on a separate location, in front the hotel, but across the Chao Phraya River. So you need to jump on one of their private luxury barges. So the relaxing begins as soon as you set foot on them, and let the river take over.
And so on my life continued enjoying the camaraderie, service and style of this marvelous hotel, for the next three days, wishing it would never end. Some unexpected experiences ( Click Here to see this post on my experience at The Oriental Cooking School )… was the full morning cooking class, we had at the Oriental Cooking School including Lunch ( by lunch, should read – EATING WHAT YOU COOKED – ha ha ha … trouble ) .
Our last night, we had a lovely farewell gala dinner, hosted by the Director of Sales & Marketing himself, at their award winning traditional Thai restaurant, Sala Rim Naam by the banks of the Chao Phraya. It was quite spectacular, and a degustation of traditional and innovative Thai classics.
Everyday new amenities would be sent to the room, making you feel so welcomed, special and cozy. I loved that in my room there was always more and more fresh flowers, fruit and also ongoing invitation to cocktails and dinners.
Some of the highlights of my stay at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, were (A) their recently renovate Bamboo Bar. I mean, regardless if you are a guest at the hotel or not, you HAVE to come and experience it. The Bamboo Bar is a landmark that personifies the passion, seductive elegance and spirit of both The Oriental Hotel and Bangkok’s rich history. From humble beginnings in 1953 in what is now the hotel’s renowned Authors’ Wing, The Bamboo Bar grew in size and reputation to become an international legend. In late 2014, the bar closed for an extensive renovation, intended to propel this iconic establishment into the future whilst preserving its unique history and unique character. The new Bamboo Bar – refreshed, remixed and reinvented. The beverage and liquor concept has been created by Mandarin Oriental’s award winning mixologist team, with Bamboo Bar Originals retaining their Signature status on the cocktail list along with classics mixed according to their original recipes. The Bamboo Bar’s new “Flavour Cocktails” – masterful blends of legacy and tradition with modernity and innovation – are set to become legends in their own right.
(B) The evenings at the lobby with the live string quartet playing classical music, adding even more charm and sex-appeal to this property.
(C) My afternoons at the pool, having my cup of tea, posting about my day, before getting ready for the evening plans.
and finally (D) Spending countless hours looking through my window. overlooking life flowing along the Chao Phraya River, the main water artery of life in Bangkok. This was my second time, staying along the banks of the Chao Phraya, and I have to say, you discover a completely new Bangkok when you do. Please allow some time also to explore the area surrounding the hotel, since it is quite representative of Bangkok and charming. And say HI on my behalf, to the many Tuk Tuk drivers, that every day would wait for me, right outside the hotel, to take me around.
Unfortunately, like all good in life, it had to end, and was time to pack, check out and move on to my next destination, Myanmar. Once again, seamless check out, luxury car and immaculate white-suited chauffeured, whisked me this time to Suvanarbhumi Airport to catch my Thai Airways flight to Yangon, Myanmar… but that is for yet another post. THANK YOU Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, for such a remarkable stay, and for helping me mature in taste and choices.
