The Old City of Jaffa or YAFO | Tel Aviv, Israel | Jaffa or Yafo in Hebrew, is the southern, oldest part of Tel Aviv, an ancient port city in Israel. The most ancient remnants that were discovered in Jaffa, were from the Bronze Age, the Period of Egyptian Rule. I spent a morning walking around, and an evening enjoying the cool sea breeze and the tree gardens. Jaffa is famous for its association with the biblical stories of Solomon, Jonah, and Saint Peter.
Only a few minutes away from the epicenter of Tel Aviv, along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Offering stunning views of Tel Aviv. MUST is to get lost walking around the Zodiac Alleys, a maze of restored alleys leading to the harbor. The St. Peter’s Church, off Kedumim Square. The flea market have revealed walls and water conduits dating to the Iron Age, Hellenistic period, early Islamic period, Crusader period and Ottoman era. The Jaffa clock-tower.
And my favorite, the museum, atelier and private home of renown Israeli artist Iliana Goor. For the first time in Israel, you have the opportunity to admire works of art from the point of view of the artist/collector rather than as exhibits in a sterile academic environment. The Ilana Goor Museum is located in an 18th century building surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of the shoreline of Tel Aviv and the Old Jaffa City. Fascinating historical events are ensconced within the Museum’s walls dating back to 280 years ago, when the building served as the first Jewish Inn for pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem.
Ready for a lunch or dinner (as we did). Stop by the Abrage Restaurant, situated at the picturesque ancient 6th square adjacent to St Peters church. Located in a historical building 100 years old Abrage is glorified with an Attomanic aroma that comes deep from within the exposed stone walls and Turquoise arches that characterize this venue.
