Borgo Egnazia Luxury Resort in Puglia | Puglia, Italy | My first stop upon arrival to the region of Puglia, in the South of Italy, was the very lovely and grand, Borgo Egnazia Luxury Resort, located in the region of Fasano in the province of Bari, and part of the Valle D’Itria. Some of you might have heard of this resort in the past, since it was the one which Justin Timberlake took over completely for his wedding to Jessica Biel. An architectural marvel of local stone and quicklime, the Borgo Egnazia recreates a traditional Apulian village amid olive groves and lemon trees. Every detail of the hotel’s main building, separate and private villas, each with its own swimming pool, has been meticulously designed to ensure the highest standards of luxury. The adjacent world-renowned San Domenico Golf Course, with 18 holes, par-72, the Engathia Spa with water and body treatments, the Beach Club, tennis and kids club, and many other activities, make it an unforgettable destination. A shimmering coastline, ancient olive groves, the Roman town of Egnazia and the UNESCO World Heritage town of Alberobello are nearby for exploration.
The hotel is divided in three main areas, La Corte (main building), Il Borgo (where I stayed) and the Private Villas. La Corte, in the main building, known as La Corte, hosts many of Borgo Egnazia’s services, including Due Camini restaurant (where we were hosted for our first dinner and were I had my breakfast every other morning) and Vair Spa. The décor combines Mediterranean tradition and modern design. Every room contains either a super king-sized bed or two separate beds, stone bathrooms and either a balcony or a private garden. The balconies and terraces offer a view to either the Adriatic Sea or to the ancient olive tree groves and the hills of the Murgia.
Il Borgo, where I stayed at a Borgo Magnifica Room with my own private balcony and terrace overlooking the valley and the Adriatic See. With its central piazza, the Borgo is the heart of the property. Its internal and external architectural design is reminiscent of a traditional Apulian village. The Borgo hosts many of Borgo Egnazia’s services, such as La Frasca restaurant and Mia Cucina trattoria (where their cooking classes are held, and where we had our second dinner, a private masterclass degustation of local Italian delights by Chef Domenico. Literally I must say it, was an Italian Food Porn experience), as well as the fabulous Trullalleri Kids Club and Fichi d’India Teens Club. The small streets and corners are typical of an Apulian village suspended in timeless tradition reflect simplicity, elegance and the highest attention to detail. During the summer, the property comes to life at the Borgo’s piazza, which is the site of events, markets, parties and games lasting as late as 11pm. Watch the video of my room Borgo Magnifica.
Le Ville, equipped with every possible comfort, the Villas are all furnished in a style that is more classic yet equally refined. The villas are the perfect choice for enjoying a totally relaxing holiday immersed in a quiet Mediterranean setting, only steps away from the livelier areas of the Borgo and La Corte. The Villas are 3-story townhouses, each equipped with 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a living area, a basement, a scenic terrace, a garden, a patio and a private swimming pool.
The gastronomical options in this particular region of Apulia are especially rich and varied: the fruit/vegetable and bovine selection from the vast and verdant farmland, together with the fish of the day, available from the nearby port of Savelletri, complete the Mediterranean diet typical of this region. The gastronomical options inside Borgo Egnazia perfectly reflect the region’s culinary traditions, while granting them a contemporary touch and reinterpreting Apulian ingredients in a unique way.
My absolute favorite experience was at Trattoria Mia Cucina, where we had a private dinner with our own Chef, which was beyond words, in style, quantity and quality. Indeed a trip for all seances. At Trattoria Mia Cucina, you can watch ‘live’ while your dishes are prepared. This is also the site of the Massaia’s cooking classes and a place where ‘social’ tables give rise to moments of fun conviviality. At “Mia Cucina” you can also taste wood fired pizzas. Their ‘pizzaiolo’ will be happy to meet all of our guests requests. My second favorite was breakfast , every morning, after my early workout, at the outdoor patio of Due Camini restaurant.
For your entertainment, there are several options, from various indoor and outdoor pools, to beaches, golf and spa. Cala Masciola Beach, located inside the property, this beach is of the rocky kind, and contains the Water Sport Center, relaxing cabanas and a restaurant on the beach. La Fonte Beach, is a 5-min. drive away from Borgo Egnazia. Unlike Cala Masciola, La Fonte is a sandy beach, making it perfect for families. It offers a game park for the youngest, loungers, gazebos and a bar.
I must admit that at first sight, I was a bit disappointed with Borgo Egnzia. They property is beyond gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but I felt it was not the true experience I was expecting from this region. Now that a few days have passed, I understand that I would recommend this hotel to those spending a few days in the region, and beginning or finishing their time in Puglia for a stay of two or three nights. Mind that some might considered it a Puglia Resort on steroids, and it is. Ideal for events, weddings, and also families.
I must say that the morning of my departure, while I was getting ready, the sun light was coming through my balcony, some Italian music was playing and I thought I had found the ultimate moment of relaxation, moment I still keep in my mind and in some way transports me back there. There are plenty of activities, from Bike rides, to water sports, golf, cooking classes, you name it. The fitness center is good, although limited on free weights, mainly cardio. My only comment on this is, WHY would the place the fitness center in a room with no windows.
Borgo Egnazia is located in the heart of Apulia, immersed among the ancient olive groves of the Itria valley and only steps away from the crystal blue Adriatic sea of Savelletri. 30 minutes from Brindisi Airport and 45 from Bari Airport.
