Georgia Aquarium Diving with the Gentle Giants

Georgia Aquarium Diving with the Gentle Giants  |  Atlanta, United States  |  Yesterday I have one of my all time life bucket list Items taken out pending. I came to the Georgia Aquarium, located at the Luckie Marietta District in Downtown Atlanta, to have a close encounter and diving experience with Whale Sharks, or how they like to call them “Gently Giants”. Such a serene, beautiful experience at and aquarium that features more animals than any other aquarium in more than ten million gallons of water.

A brief intro to the aquarium, the conservation aspects, and of course safety tips for your drive, and you are good to go to the main pool, to begin your dive. Get your diving gear on (no need to be a certified scuba diver for the basic dive, yes for the scuba diving tour).
This exhibit was specially designed to house whale sharks, the largest fish species in the world. With 4,574 square feet of viewing windows, a 100-foot-long underwater tunnel, 185 tons of acrylic windows and the second largest viewing window in the world at 23 feet tall by 61 feet wide and 2 feet thick, visitors will have multiple opportunities to view all of these magnificent animals. No other aquarium in the world has ever attempted to manage the variety and size of fish in this major exhibit.
Georgia Aquarium is home to four Whale Sharks, four manta rays. and thousands of other fish in the 6.3 million gallon exhibit, the largest aquarium habitat in the world. The fourth ray, who measures almost nine feet across and weighs approximately 265 pounds, was collected off the coast of Florida.

Diving with Whale Sharks was as serene and beautiful as it looks a true haute experience a Must DO when visiting Atlanta. The Whale Sharks are HUGE and very curious, not afraid to come close to the divers, nor to swim right into you, as you can see on the video taken during my dive. Whale Sharks may reach a maximum size of 40-66 feet.

Other species you will be swimming around with you are Largetooth Sawfish, Zebra Sharks, Lesser Devil Rays, Sandbar Sharks, Spotted Eagle Rays, Blacktip reef Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, schools of predatory trevally jacks and enormous goliath grouper and all ply the waters of this ocean habitat containing more than six million gallons of saltwater. But other than the spectacular gentle Whale Sharks, my absolute favorites, from which I could not take me eyes out during my dive, were the Giant Mantas.
Diving with the Gentle Giants, part of the Ocean Voyager project and experience, is definitely a MUST DO activity to include into your itinerary during your next visit to Atlanta. Carlos Melia Luxury Travel Curator – www.carlosmelia.com
