Le Negresco Hotel unexpected Palace | Nice, France | If we talk about traditional hotels that exude luxury and charm, well I would risk to say the Le Negresco Hotel in French Riviera is on the top of my list. The minute you walk by the door and enter the lobby of the hotel, a fairy tale of sophistication unfolds. Le Negresco first opened its doors on January 8th, 1913. The hotel, designed by Henri Negrescu, immediately attracted a brilliant international clientele, Kings of the old and the new world. Jeanne Augier is the guardian of this myth. Owner of the Palace since 1957, this great lady – with deeply-rooted convictions – has devoted her life to the preservation and the development of this unique heritage.
I was hosted at Le Negresco, during my visit to the French Riviera – Nice and St Tropez – in two occasions, being able to experience both the iconic traditional suites with the original style, and the newly refreshed version, with stunning views of the promenade and beach of Nice. Unique and timeless, the Negresco is above all a place where everything is possible, flamboyance served on a tray. The unique rooms are equipped with exceptional authentic furniture and works of art from Louis XIII period to today.
Facing the Mediterranean Sea on the famous Promenade des Anglais, the hotel is a few minutes’ walk away from Nice old town. The perfect combination of historic and contemporary is Negresco’s trademark. Equipped and personalized with exceptional period furniture, each one of the 96 rooms and 21 suites draws its inspiration from the most remarkable French art periods. From Louis XIII style to modern art, five centuries of history are represented. Every room and suite is equipped with LCD TV and wifi access.
Sea View Junior Suites have everything you could wish for: view, decoration and space. With a living room space for relaxation, the Junior Suites offer comfort, luxury and refinement. Facing south, they have a unique view of the sea. Not to be missed are the Royal Suite, Imperial Suite, Napoleon Suite, Pompadour and Monserrat Caballe. I spent my first stay at this suite, before heading to St. Tropez.
On my second stay, I got to experience a piece of history, at one of their signature Exclusive Rooms, which I must say I simply adored. The Exclusive rooms perfectly embody the “Negresco Spirit” as desired by Madame Augier. In the style of Louis XIV or Marie-Antoinette, baroque or classic, the period furniture takes you on a unique journey through the history of France. The Exclusive rooms look out on the gardens of the Palais Masséna and its century-old palm trees with the sea and the Baie des Anges in the background.
A must try is La Rotonde Brasserie, a décor filled with vibrant colors, an 18th century carousel and its wooden horses make La Rotonde a very unexpected place. It is a warm and bright restaurant where it is pleasant to linger after a delicious gourmet meal. A simple menu and yet full of creative surprises. From the first sunny days, its terrace opens onto the sea and the sun.
And a sumptuous breakfast at the terraces of the La Rotonde is in order every morning, while you see Nice wake up and become alive, along with the smell and feel of the Mediterranean breeze. I particularly, had the joy and honor to enjoy mines accompanied by Mr. Bord – General Manage of this unexpected palace.
Le Relais Bar, an institution of refinement and fantastic cocktail. With its authentic walnut woodwork from 1913 and its exceptional tapestry from 1683, Negresco’s bar is a place of hushed tasting. When the evening comes the bar wakes to the rhythm of jazz chords and Latino music.
There is so much history and happening in this hotel that you just can stop staring at every single corner of the property. There is a story telling on each single piece of art and room. Being as passionate as I am for hotel, I feel so fortunate and honored to have had the chance to spend two night at this beacon of hospitality and service, and experience I would highly recommend to those who will know how to cherish and understand it.
