21 Club by Orient-Express in New York City

21 Club by Belmond in New York CityNew York, United States  |  Sometimes prejudice might play bad judgement on your choices, and this was the case for me. When I was invited to come to 21 Club, the first few ideas that came to my mind were stuffy, boring and red meat based menu. Well let me tell you I was wrong on all of them. Yes you must wear a jacket, and the style is very slick, but who minds to dress up for the crime. A crime for a great gourment experience signature by Belmond, right. Begin your night with a relaxin Grey Goose Vodka Martini with huge olives, and from there on enjoy a fantastic eveninig in a cozy and buzzling atmosphere.
Very crowded, bohth the 21 Bar and the 21 Club. Right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan at 52nd Street in between 5th and 6th Avenue. This iconic Belmond restaurant offers superb American cuisine, a Grand Award-winning wine list, and attentive service in a setting that is sophisticated yet fun. Do not miss to step down and check the legendary Prohibition-era wine cellar. There is so much story behind 21 Club, that go beyond the gourmet experience, that makes this restaurant much more interesting and irresistible. Such are the Jockeys you will see as soon as you come to the front portch and the toys you will see hanging all over the ceilings. Perhaps the most poignant item in the collection is a model of the PT-109, presented as a gift to ’21’ by President John F. Kennedy.
Cuisine sticks to the tried and true; 21 Classics, including the burger favored by Ari Onassis, provide the best traditional experience. Watering hole of celebrities, captains of industry, world leaders and dignitaries of every order, the Bar Room is also renowned for its “toy” collection of colorful sports memorabilia and corporate logo items presented as gifts to the restaurant. My choices for the night match with Sancere White wine, were: Appetizer Seared Spanish Octopus (USD 17)  and Main Course (photo above)  Flax Seed-Crusted Escolar, blue prawns, baby bok choy, celeriac purée, orange-ginger reduction (USD 41) by Executive Chef John Greeley. Presentation 100 points.
Dessert, this amazing selection of 3 Cheeses: Humbolt Fog Tomme, Sainte-Maure de Touraine and Bleu D’Auvergne. But I must admit that I was not able to control myself and taste, or better almost share half of the Valencia Rice Pudding of my host. Yes guilty of being a big foodie. Either for a special occassion, reunion with friends, business dinner or simply a drink at the 21 Bar, I strongly recommend 21 Club. And leave your prejudice home, as I should have done.
