Sail the Mae Khong River to the Golden Triangle | Golden Triangle, Thailand | One of the tours you should consider when in the areas of Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen or Chiang Rai, is the sailing along the Ruak River to the intersection with the Mae Khong River to find the central point denominated Golden Triangle. So board your long tail boat, sail across by bamboo fields, small fishing villages and decide where would you like to spend the rest of your day. The options are Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) or Laos.
I chose to visit Laos and the local market on the Golden Triangle’s water border with Thailand. Golden Triangle has been for years one of Asia’s two main illicit opium-producing areas. Most of the world’s heroin came from the Golden Triangle until the early 21st century when Afghanistan became the world’s largest producer.
My tour was coordinated by the Four Seasons Tented Camps Golden Triangle, but there are tours operators and long tail boat rentals all along the Mae Khong river. Stay out of trouble and do not cross to the Casinos on the Laos side of the river. Thailand forbids the existence of casinos on their territory, so casinos and local markets have proliferated all along the Laos’s coast.
Photo below is me crossing the boarded into Laos. No worries for short visits they do not even stamp your passport, but keep it handy just in case. Carlos Melia Luxury Travel Curator – www.carlosmelia.com
