Saiyok Elephant Park in Thailand | Kanchanaburi,Thailand | Have you ever dream on either getting up close and personal or ridding an elephant? Well it was indeed part of my bucket list, and as from today, I can say that I have done it and enjoyed very very much. Adventure ,new born elephants ,feeding them and observing Thai wisdom on how elephants and mahouts live together at Saiyok Elephant Park. You will also get to learn and spend some time with the local Mahouts.
A complete differing experience from the one I had in Africa less than a month ago in Botswana, at the Orient-Express Camps. Some number of Asian elephants have been tamed and in contact with human being for over hundred years, and now trained by the Mahouts. This make them approachable and in Asia you can interact with them and even ride on top of them. This camp is located over 2 hours from Bangkok, and can easily be combined with the Kwai River adventure.
For those not familiar with the word, a Mahout is a person who drives, feeds and trains an elephant. The word mahout comes from the Hindi words mahaut and mahavat. Usually, a mahout starts as a boy in the family business when he is assigned an elephant early in its life and they would be attached to each other throughout the elephant’s life.
The Saiyok Elephant Camp has approximately 50 elephants. The treks around the property takes around 30 minutes, during which you will not only ride them, but also be allow to interact and in some meaning of the word, play with them… feeding them bananas or playing in or with the water.
Once done with the Elephant ride, you will be invited to a 20 minutes Bamboo Rafting ride along the KwaiNoi River, which at all is the highlight of the park, but quite enjoyable way and a chance to fresh up from the heat of the blazing sun.
