Colicchio & Sons Tap Room and Dining Room in Chelsea | New York, Chelsea | Another great option in New York by celebrity chef Tom Colicchio, formerly co-founder of Grammercy Tavern, and present founder of CRAFT Restaurants Group. Colicchio & Sons, took over previous CRAFTSteak Restaurant, improving the design, concept and gourmet offer. Check it out. !!!
The evening started with a glass of Rose after a long day at work. The bar was fully sold out with a great vibe, that despite of being busy allowed you to keep a conversation and unwind. High ceilings, dark oak floors and 360 glass windows facing 9th Avenue. One of the things that stroke me the most, was the professional attitude and passions everyone at the restaurant shown during our time there. Making it not only a welcoming experience, but an enjoyable one, and trust me attitude is golden and rare in New York City.
Our first dishes came right out of the Brick Oven at the TAP Room, a more informal option with tapas, salads, pizza and a great selection of draft beers from all around the world.
Tap Room is open for Lunch: Monday – Friday, 12pm – 3pm; Brunch: Saturday and Sunday, 11:00am – 3:00pm and Dinner: Sunday – Thursday, 5:30pm-10pm & Friday and Saturday, 5:30pm – 11pm.
Beers on Tap from Hop Head Red Ale from San Diego, California, Kriek Cherry Lambic from Boon Lembeek to a Belgian Independence Saison from Belgium. Fan of beers, then here you have a great selection, and the expert comments by their Beer specialist.
At the Tap Room we tried the Ricotta Cavatelli with English Peas, Caramelized Onions and Mint (USD 14) which was just amazing, and the Roasted Corn Salad with Cherry Tomatoes. We also had the Tomato, Mozzarella & basil Pizza (USD 12), but I must admit we were quite not impressed by the taste and the crust. Being and Italian restaurant featuring an brick oven, you really expect more.
From there we moved to the main Dining Room, to have, just a few steps away, a complete different experience. Thought for hose looking for a high-end dining experience while still remaining casual and trendy. Huge room, with privacy space in between tables (which for me is a big plus, since I do not want to have to whisper all night) long.
The Dining Room is for Dinner only: Monday – Thursday 6:00pm to 10pm, Friday – Saturday 6:00pm to 11pm, Sunday 6:00pm to 9:00pm. I know, for those of us coming from South America or Europe, these hours seem to be a bit on the early side, but hey that is the local rule. Talking to Scott Sozmen, Restaurant Manager, he shared with us that they do not try to have more than one cycle per night at the main Dining Room, allowing guest to relax and enjoy their diner in full.
The menu features new options every night, but the classics go from Grilled Octopus, Razor Clams Risotto to Roasted Normandy Duck or Grenmalure Farm Baby Lamb. They even offer a Fix Prize menu(USD 78) which includes: Choice of three Savory Courses, and choice of Dessert or Featured Cheese of the evening. My choices for the night were: First Course, Raw Tuna, Urchin Vinaigrette, Sea Beans and Salad Burnet (USD 19).
Second Course, all along with a great Sancerre Chavignol Yves Martin 2010 Loire (USD 14 x glass) was the Butter-Poached Halibut, spring Onion, Macadamia Nut and Fava Bean Ravioli (USD 31), and in all fairness I have to say that the Ravioli was just beyond real.
Last but not least, I was quite impressed by their Cheese selection, making this my Dessert choice for the night, well paired with jams and dried fruits. The way it was served, was an experience itself, that made everyone around turn and pay attention to the expert explanation.
But I would encourage you to try some of the fantastic and decadent desserts on the menu by Pastry Chef Stephen Collucci, with options like Hazelnut Churros, Caramel Cream Doughnuts or Mascarpone Panna Cotta. Also a great selection of Teas from all over the world. CM
