Balaboosta in NOLITA ( NOLITA – North of Little Italy ) • From the creators of TAIM, they present the innovative Mediterranean Cuisine of Einat Admony. Was a beautiful autumn sunny day, and my friend Craig invited me to walk around the area of NOLITA and SOHO. We met at Balaboosta for brunch, and indeed was a great idea. Balaboosta in Yiddish means “the perfect housewife”… go figure ha ha ha.
Although we had reservations, we had to wait for almost 20 minutes… but their customer service was perfect and they invited us with Red and Rose Sangria, which in less that 5 minutes made us forget and forgive. A very informal room, very crowded being one of the last sunny warm Saturdays of the season, but still a nice atmosphere where you can chat and feel comfortable. The cuisine is a mix of Mediterranean styles. There is some Jewish, Lebanese influence in the food which I personally LOVE. We started off with a Mediterranean Sampler with Hummus, Babaganoush, Roasted Red Pepper Salad, with Za’atar Pita (USD 9).
For the Main Course and after our second or third round of Sangria, I went for the Tunisian Sandwich Tuna, Hard Boiled Egg, Pickled Carrots, Potato, Olives, Harissa, Mixed Green Salad (USD 14) which was absolutely delicious. For those interested on the drinks and the liquid diet, Red Sangria Red Wine, Cassis, Orange, Cranberry (USD 9 by the glass) and Rosé Sangria Rosé Wine, Mint, Peach (USD 10 by the glass).
I will keep Balaboosta in my favorite list and become a Brunch regular. It is a great plan for a Saturday or Sunday, to have brunch there, then go for coffee to Gimme Coffee and later spend the afternoon walking around the shops in NOLITA and SOHO.
